onglyza 2.5mg

Description

Onglyza 2.5 mg Tablet is an antidiabetic medicine used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adult patients. Patients are advised to follow a strict diet and exercise regimen along with this medicine for the best possible effect. This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Uses

Saxagliptin is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke.Saxagliptin works by increasing levels of natural substances called incretins. Incretins help to control blood sugar by increasing insulin release, especially after a meal. They also decrease the amount of sugar your liver makes

How to use OnglyzaRead the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start using saxagliptin and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily.

Mechanism of Action

Onglyza (saxagliptin) is an orally-active inhibitor of the DPP4 enzyme. D-PP4 inhibitors work by affecting the action of natural hormones in the body called incretins .Increased concentrations of the incretin hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) are released into the bloodstream from the small onglyza 2.5mg tablets intestine in response to meals. These hormones cause insulin release from the pancreatic beta cells in a glucose-dependent manner but are inactivated by the DPP4 enzyme within minutes. GLP-1 also lowers glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells, reducing hepatic glucose production.

Pancreatitis:

There have been postmarketing reports of acute pancreatitis in patients taking ONGLYZA, and in the SAVOR cardiovascular outcomes trial. Observe for pancreatitis. If pancreatitis is suspected, discontinue ONGLYZA.

Hypoglycemia

When ONGLYZA was used in combination with a sulfonylurea or with insulin, the incidence of confirmed hypoglycemia was increased over that of placebo. Consider lowering the dose of these agents when coadministered with ONGLYZA.
